I had to attend a trade-show in Belgium last week and decided to stay the night at the Aloft Brussels Schuman. I have stayed quite a few times over the last few years at this property. It was the first Aloft hotel in Europe, it opened its doors in 2010. They did a good job taking care of the rooms and public spaces tough, there is hardly any wear showing.

I checked in online via the SPG app, as I tried to go Keyless. (Starwood has a keyless program at some of its hotels whereby you can use your phone’s Bluetooth connection to open the lock on your door, enabling you to skip checking in at the front desk) While a great concept in theory, at this hotel you still have to go by the front desk to sign some papers unfortunately, apparently it is some EU or Belgian law.

Whilst checking in online I got a message form the app that I had been upgraded to a Savvy room. This was my first upgrade at this hotel in many stays so I was excited. Unfortunately the Savvy room only gets you a nicer view compared to the normal Aloft rooms. Still I was pleasantly surprised as room upgrades are not part of SPG benefits at the Aloft (and Element) hotel brands.

The Keyless system worked pretty well, it never failed to work during multiple entries to my room. It works by bluetooth and you need to have the SPG app open each time you want to unlock the door.

The Savvy Room

The room was a typical Aloft style room, very similar to most Alofts I have stayed at. It had a nice view of Schuman squire and was located near the elevator, but not right next to it. The bed was very comfortable and I slept well. I only had one problem during my stay, and that was the alarm clock going off at 4am, but dit not mention it to the front desk as I used the e-checkout feature.

The bathroom featured standard Aloft amenities. Personally I am not a fan of these multi use containers, but the quality of the products is fine.

Common areas

Front Desk

Bar

The common areas were similar to what you normally see in Aloft hotels. Aloft invites people to hang out communally, play some games and use the bar. In the morning this is also where breakfast is served.

Breakfast

Breakfast was served as a self serve buffet. As a SPG Platinum member I got free breakfast as my welcome amenity. It seemed like most people had breakfast included in their room rate. If you don’t have it included the cost is a very reasonable 12,50 Euro. It was a simple continental breakfast but it did the job and was good value.

Conclusion

I had a pleasurable stay at the Aloft Brussels Schuman. The room was clean, and even tough a few years old, it was kept up pretty well. Rates over the weekend are very reasonable, my room rate was only 62 Euro. It’s very standard Aloft, and I would not hesitate to stay here again.
